Common Mistakes When Replacing Plumbing Fixtures
Whether you're a confident DIYer or a professional plumber, replacing plumbing fixtures is a job where small errors have expensive consequences. Below are the mistakes we see most often, along with the fix for each one.
Sizing, compatibility and local codes
Fittings or pipework that don't match the existing system are a leading cause of leaks and poor water pressure β always measure existing pipework and check product specifications before buying replacements, and ask a plumber if you're unsure.
Local plumbing codes govern how installations must be carried out; skipping them can mean legal trouble as well as an unsafe result. Check requirements and permits before starting any replacement project.
Connections, sealing and testing
Poorly sealed joints are one of the most common causes of hidden water damage. Use PTFE tape or pipe joint compound on threaded connections, tighten firmly without over-torquing, and always run a water test before closing up walls or floors β checking for leaks, odd noises and proper drainage.
Always shut off the main water supply (or the relevant isolation valve) before removing old fixtures β a step that's easy to forget and costly when it is.
Materials, slope and ventilation
Mixing incompatible pipe materials without the correct transition fittings can cause corrosion and weakened joints β copper and galvanised steel, for example, should never be joined directly.
Drain lines need the correct slope (roughly ΒΌ inch per foot) to avoid slow drainage and backups, and every fixture needs proper venting to prevent sewer gas and drainage problems β an air admittance valve can help where standard venting isn't practical.
When to call a professional
DIY plumbing can save money on simple jobs, but complex replacements β water heaters, major re-piping, anything touching the main supply β benefit from a licensed plumber's expertise. Careful planning, the right tools and professional advice where needed will save far more than they cost.
